About Fuerza
Soluz Films was formed as a response to a Peace & Justice Journalism contest for a grant to make a documentary. The contest was among students at Earlham, Manchester, and Goshen Colleges (members of the Plowshares Collaborative).
Production began in late 2005, before immigration had taken the forefront as a hot topic. Several people in the group had personal connections to immigrants and immigration in general, and thought it would be an important topic for our community.
As we started researching possible stories, we quickly realized we had started just in time - soon came protests and counterprotests across the United States, demanding immigrant rights - and justice.
The team traveled to Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas in August, and the majority of our footage comes from this trip. We also were able to gather lots of footage in the Goshen community.
As we visited these places and talked to people, we realized the story here was connections. Everybody in Apan knew someone near Goshen, or may have even lived there themselves. There was a huge connection between the two towns, but few people knew about it in Goshen. So we decided to tell that story.
In November of 2006, after several months of intense translating, writing, and editing, we premiered the 30 minute documentary to a packed house at the Goshen Theater in downtown Goshen.
